'HONEST US', A STORY ABOUT LIFE, LOVE AND SUSTAINABLE FRIENDSHIPS.

THERE HAS BEEN MUCH TALK ABOUT FASHION FILM OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS. VAST AMOUNTS OF MONEY HAVE BEEN SPENT BY INDEPENDENT DESIGNERS AND HERITAGE HOUSES TO BE A PART OF THIS FRESH WAY OF COMMUNICATING THE SPIRIT OF A BRAND IN MOTION.

MANY BELIEVE FASHION FILM HAS BECOME A POWERFUL NEW MEDIA TO KEEP THE FAST GROWING FASHION CROWD SEDUCED. THE RESULT HAS NOT BEEN AS AMBITIOUS OR INTERESTING SO FAR. MOST FASHION FILMS TODAY AREN'T VERY PLEASANT TO WATCH. THEY ARE EITHER PAINFULLY SLOW, COLD AND MONOTONOUS OR INSULTINGLY SUPERFICIAL ADVERTISEMENTS TO PROMOTE A BRANDS LATEST PRODUCTS. NO COMPANY HAS SUCCEEDED IN CREATING SOMETHING THAT CAPTURED THE HEARTS OF THEIR AUDIENCE. BRAZILIAN BORN 25 YEAR OLD VINICIUS BOBSIN IS ABOUT TO CHANGE THAT. I DISCOVERED HIS FILMS ON VIMEO IN NOVEMBER 2012.

AT FIRST HIS WORK INTRIGUED ME AS THERE WAS A CERTAIN INNOCENCE ABOUT IT WHICH I THOUGHT TO BE VERY ENDEARING. SOME OF BOSBIN'S EARLIER FILMS ARE SIMPLE VIDEO MESSAGES TO HIS SISTER WHO HE HAD LEFT BEHIND WHEN HE MOVED TO FINLAND IN JANUARY 2010. BUT IT WAS THE FILM 'NORTHERN MOON' THAT HAD AN IMPACT ON ME, AND STRUCK ME MOST. BOTH DELICATE AND POETIC, WITHIN 'NOTHERN MOON' BOBSIN SUCCEEDED WHERE OTHERS OFTEN FAIL. HE WAS ABLE TO CAPTURE THAT WHICH IS SO RARE AND UNIQUE TO CAPTURE ON FILM, AUTHENTICITY.

WHEN I ASKED THE YOUNG DIRECTOR TO CREATE A VIDEO FOR 'HONEST BY' HE KINDLY ACCEPTED AND CREATED A VERY INTIMATE SHORT FILM IN WHICH HE HIMSELF STARS ALONGSIDE HIS BEST FRIEND. THE FILM IS CALLED 'HONEST US' AND ONLY LASTS A FEW SECONDS BUT IT CAPTURES THE MOOD OF THE "HONEST BY BRUNO PIETERS" COLLECTION PERFECTLY. LAST MONTH I FINALLY GOT THE CHANCE TO INTERVIEW BOBSIN AND FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE MAN BEHIND THE ARTIST. 

BP: I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE MOVIE YOU MADE FOR HONEST BY. WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE FILM?
VB. The inspiration was friendship. For me the video is a memoir about the different stages we go through when developing a relationship with someone we love.
The questioning whether the connection is real or not...
Feeling as if you're dreaming when you are with that person...
The speed of the moments that you have with that person, that seems to go by even faster once they become a memory..
And the solitude you feel when you are not together...

BP: THE FILM IS CALLED 'HONEST US' WHO IS US?
VB. 'Us' refers to my best friend Heidi, and myself. The video is a tribute to our friendship. 'Us' is also a reference to everyone involved in making this happen, like my boyfriend and yourself.

BP: WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT FILM?
VB. I see 'film' as a way to truthfully express myself. My films represent what I feel inside.

BP: WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT FASHION?
VB. The fantasy. But also the ability it has to create change. For myself physical change can sometimes stimulate me to try and also open my mind to new things. Fashion can make me believe that the changes we need to make on the inside can be just as easy to achieve as the changes we can make on the outside.

BP: WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON THE FASHION INDUSTRY TODAY?
VB. I believe that even though the fashion industry has become so big, there is still enough space for diversity, different opinions and for everyone to speak their mind. I believe not everyone is being heard.

BP: YOU RECENTLY MOVED FROM FINLAND TO SWEDEN. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING IN ESKILSTUNA,SWEDEN?
VB. The fact that I live on a farm in the countryside away from the city is something I love, and furthermore the fact that I am able to grow my own food in the summer time is also wonderful.

BP: DO YOU EVER MISS LIVING IN BRAZIL?
VB. I don't necessarily miss living there, but I miss people and places.

BP: WHAT DRIVES YOU?
VB. Love and my impulsiveness.

BP: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF?
VB. I would describe myself as someone who wants to be better for both the world that he lives in and the people around him. However I also believe that it can take a lifetime to achieve such things. I sometimes use this as an excuse to put things aside until 'tomorrow'.

BP: WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOURSELF?
VB.I dream a lot.

BP: WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU LIKE IN OTHERS?
VB. Kindness, honesty and spontaneity.

BP: WHAT IS YOUR DREAM?
VB. To live with less, surrounded by the people I love, near nature, whilst I continue creating and dreaming.

BP: ARE YOU IN LOVE?
VB. Yes.

BP: IS BEING IN LOVE, LOVE ?
VB. No, to be in love, for me, is to feel that anything is possible, but it is also a search for something.
To love is to feel that anything is possible when you already have found everything you were looking for.

BP: WHAT IS A GOOD FRIEND?
VB. A good friend is the other part of you that you find in someone else. It is a part of you that you can see in someone else.

BP: WHAT MAKES A GOOD LOVER?
VB. The insecurity of knowing that anything can happen.

BP: WHAT MAKES A GREAT PARTNER?
VB. The security of knowing that anything can happen.

BP: WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT LIFE SO FAR?
VB. That dreams are worth having, but need work to come true.

BP: WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIFE?
VB. The processes in between things.

BP: WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY TODAY?
VB. Be positive and be the change you dream of.

BP: WHAT IS HAPPINESS TO YOU?
VB. To have the people I love around me.

BP: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE?
VB. I don't actually remember where it comes from, but it's the one that says "we are all stardust".

BP: HOW GREEN ARE YOU?
VB. We recycle all of our trash, most of our furniture and clothes are from second hand shops and the food we eat is almost all produced in Sweden. In the summer we grow our own vegetables, we also conserve them for the winter.

BP: ARE YOU A VEGETARIAN OR A VEGAN?
VB. I am a vegetarian.

BP: DO YOU FEEL MORE DESIGNERS COULD PRODUCE IN A MORE SUSTAINABLE WAY?
VB. I believe all designers could produce in a sustainable way, but of course it depends on their clients. The demand needs to be there first. In the end fashion is made for the people.

BP: WHY DO YOU THINK MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE BECOMING CONCERNED ABOUT THESE ISSUES?
VB. Probably because we have a greater awareness now of what is going on in the world. I think we have the media to thank for that. But also because I believe people are beginning to feel more responsible for the life they have been given and they feel the desire to give back.

BP: DO YOU BELIEVE EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON OR ARE WE THE REASON WHY THINGS HAPPEN?
VB. I believe that we are the reason why things happen. Destiny is another word for choice.

BP: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE HUMANITY TODAY?
VB. Aware but scared to embrace that awareness and take action.

BP: DO YOU BELIEVE ONE PERSON CAN CHANGE THE WORLD?
VB. Yes.

BP: ARE YOU THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD?
VB. I am trying.
