KIM & LAYNA.

KIM PEERS AND LAYNA VANCAUTEREN ARE, AS MANY WOMEN TODAY, MULTITASKING CHAMPIONS. KIM HAS BEEN MODELLING SINCE THE AGE OF 18, GRACING THE COVERS OF INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINES AND BEING THE FACE OF SOME OF FASHION'S MOST RENOWNED BRANDS. GETTING MARRIED AND HAVING A FAMILY HAS NOT PREVENTED THIS BELGIAN BEAUTY FROM WORKING AS A STYLIST AND MODEL. LAYNA IS NOT ONLY A MODEL AND STYLIST, SHE ALSO WORKS AS A BOOKER AND COACH AT A MODEL AGENCY IN BRUSSELS.  BOTH WOMEN ARE OBSESSED WITH VINTAGE CLOTHING AND HAVE A DEEP LOVE FOR BELGIAN FASHION DESIGNERS. AND THEY CHOSE TO SHARE THAT PASSION WITH US  THROUGH THEIR NEW WEB SHOP. KIMANDLAYNA.COM IS A PLATFORM THAT SHOWCASES  ALL THE CLOTHES THEY LOVE AND HOW THEY ENJOY WEARING THEM. KIM AND LAYNA HOPE TO INSPIRE THEIR CLIENTS AND HELP THEM CREATE AN OUTFIT THAT IS BOTH COOL AND SUSTAINABLE.  EVERY MONTH THEY WILL TEAM UP WITH A PHOTOGRAPHER TO INVENT NEW FASHION STORIES WITH ITEMS FROM THEIR STORE. WE CAUGHT UP WITH KIM AND LAYNA TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THESE TWO PASSIONATE YOUNG WOMEN WHO ARE ABOUT TO START A NEW CHAPTER IN THEIR LIVES.

BP. HOW DID YOU BOTH MEET ?
LV. We've known each other for a while now but only've gotten close recently. But I think the first time we met was when Kim styled me for a photo shoot with Alex Salinas, themed SNOW WHITE. My favourite shoot so far.

KP. Oh I didn't know that's your favourite shoot. Still love that shoot too.

BP. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA TO CREATE THE 'KIM AND LAYNA' ONLINE STORE?
LV. I actually started selling a bunch of my own clothes on Facebook a few months back and this was such a success that I decided to take it a step further and start up a real business. Kim was going to give me clothes to sell when she asked me if maybe she could join. She has great taste and tons of stuff so I agreed. We are both passionate about vintage and belgian brands so we figured we would be a perfect match to start up this business.

KP. I did flea markets from time to time but when I wanted to sell Ann Demeulemeester or other high fashion pieces, people were allways shocked by the price, even if it was more than half the original price. Friends told me to start an online store, but I didn't want to start this on my own. And then came Layna... It's fun and business at the same time. We agree on a lot of things very easily.

BP. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT VINTAGE CLOTHING?
LV. Mainly the cuts and the fabric. I love the old world feel to it. You feel there is history to a piece of vintage clothing. It's not just something that's been thrown out each season. The longer you keep it, the better it gets.

KP. I've been shopping vintage since I was 13 years old. Vintage makes me dream about David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Patty Smith, The Clash, French movies from the 60's, glam rock, punk... and many more. I mix those dreams with the present and I make my own identity with it.

BP. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE IN STORE RIGHT NOW?
LV. Hmm, probably the cloud jumpsuit by JC DE CASTELBAJAC. It's a show stopper.

KP. Silk dress from A.F. Vandevorst.

BP. DO YOU HAVE A LOT OF VINTAGE ITEMS IN YOUR OWN WARDROBE?
LV. Yes I do, let's say it's 50/50. I really love vintage dresses and jackets. But it's important to find good fabrics. I've also started customising vintage shoes with my boyfriend. They were a hit amongst my friends so we are planning to work further on the idea.

KP. Yes and some pieces are there for many years. Like a black blazer that I bought in Tokyo in 2004 that looks very Patty Smith. I'm wearing the blazer again after a long period of just hanging in my stock. I like vintage shopping everywhere I go. London, New York, Paris, L.A. Recently I bought a vintage Japanese kimono in Barcelona.

BP. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT FASHION?
LV. Fashion is something that makes me happy to wake up too everyday. I'm not loving every part of the fashion industry but I love the possibilities that it gives you to go beyond what you see and make something personal out of it. It's a way of expressing how you feel without having to speak one word. Words gets complicated sometimes, fashion does not.

KP. I wouldn't call myself a “fashionista”. I love only a part of fashion. The creative, interesting, inspiring, talented and social part. Characters. People who dare, who stand out, ... When fashion is mixed with and inspired by other areas like art and music or nature...

BP. WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON THE FASHION INDUSTRY TODAY?
LV. It's very fast paced. Everything is constantly changing which to me is very wasteful. It's not about longevity really, more about who can be more innovative in the shortest amount of time.

KP. I can not give a short answer to this question. There are so many aspects in the fashion industry. But to give you something: I like to compare fashion today with fashion for example from the Renaissance. I like being aware of the moment we live in.What I don't like is high prices combined with bad quality, probably have been made very cheap.

BP. HOW GREEN ARE YOU?
LV. Not as green as I would like to be unfortunately... I buy organic and vintage. Once I have a house with a garden I'm planning to grow all my own vegetables. but that's still a far away dream..

KP. I prefer organic and local food. I have a vegetable garden. I buy vintage. I don't eat meat. I vote for people who really care about the environment.

BP. LAST QUESTION, I ASK EVERYONE THIS QUESTION, 'ARE YOU THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD?'
LV. Hard question to answer. Hmm, what I really like about what we are doing is the ambition that goes into it. I'm very proud that as a young person with no real experience, I managed to get this business going. It's empowering to say the least and I would like to see more people feel empowered. We sometimes don't realise what we are capable of.

KP. If you want to change the world start with yourself, is definitly a motto that I follow. I'm convinced about meditation. I think everybody should do meditation. I do it everyday and it has changed me a lot. I see things in a different perspective, clearer. I have less stress. Fasting once a week is also great. It gives you a fysical and mental pause. When you love yourself, you take care of yourself, to me it's obvious that I don't like to get poisoned with chemicals, get treated with aggression, I don't smoke or drink alcohol, I love healthy food,... I support monthly 1 charity organisation. My husband also supports one, another. I believe in the power of words. I wear a necklace from Wouters & Hendrix that says “I love you” I can see people softening after they read it. It's subtle but effective, at least for a moment. My children are a big inspiration, their smiles are so beautiful, pure and open. How can I not want to be a better person for them and the world?! And I just hope at the end I can inspire my children.

BP. THANK YOU FOR THIS INTERVIEW.
