PATENT LEATHER
Patent leather is made by coating a fabric base with a varnish. It has a shiny mirror-like surface. The varnish or lacquer used can be pigmented or non-pigmented and may be based on:

• vegetable oil that dries and hardens – linseed oil is normally used
• cellulose derivatives like nitro-cellulose
• synthetic products (including thermoplastics) – polyurethane plastics are normally used

SYNTHETIC BREATHABLE LEATHER
This is a leather substitute made from a plastic coating, such as polyurethane, on a fibrous base layer.

THUNIT
An antislip and waterproof material registered to Davos manufacturing. It is a unique material that represents the best alternative to leather. Its flexibility, workability, scrape-resistance and waterproofness ensure better performances compared with natural leather.

ABS PLASTICS
ABS plastics are composed of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene in varying proportions, combined by a variety of methods including graft copolymerization (a method used to chemically synthesize a copolymer) and physical blending. It can also be recycled.

ACRYLONITRILE
Acrylonitrile is a chemical compound with the formula C₃H₃N. It is an important monomer (a molecule that may bind chemically to other molecules) for the manufacture of useful plastics.

BUTADIENE                                                             
Butadiene is a simple diene (a hydrocarbon that contains two carbon double bonds) with the formula C₄H₆. It is an important chemical used as a monomer (a molecule that may bind chemically to other molecules) in the production of synthetic rubber.

STYRENE
Styrene is an organic compound (any member of a large class of gaseous, liquid, or sold chemical compounds whose molecules contain carbon) with the chemical formula C₆H₅CH=CH₂. It is used in liquid form and helps in the creation of plastic materials that are required to be strong, flexible and lightweight.

MORELAST
Morelast is a semi-rigid toe-puff (a piece of material inserted as a stiffener into the toe of a shoe between the outside and the lining) with a high-elastic return. Made from a flexible but supportive cotton fabric.

TEXON FIBERBOARD
Texon Fiberboard is a compressed cellulose particle board that has a dense, firm composition and is much tougher and more durable than typical cardboard. Texon Fiberboard adds rigidity to the mid-sole of a shoe, which increases the level of support a shoe provides the arch and ankle.

ECOMASTICE
Ecomastice is a natural rubber adhesive. It is called ‘eco’ because the manufacturer uses only raw materials with a low environmental impact.

REACH EUROPEAN NORM
The REACH European Norm is a regulation of the European Parliament No. 1907/2006 and of the Council of 18^th December 2006 concerning the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemicals. REACH foresees a restriction process to regulate the manufacture, placing on the market or use of certain substances, either on their own or in mixtures or articles, within the EU territory if they pose an unacceptable risk to health or the environment. Such activities may be limited or even banned, if necessary. The restriction is designed to manage risks that are not addressed by the other REACH processes or by other Community legislation. The REACH Regulation places greater responsibility on industry to manage the risks from chemicals and to provide safety information on the substances. Manufacturers and importers are required to gather information on the properties of their chemical substances, which will allow their safe handling, and to register the information in a central database run by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki. OEKO-TEX
The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 was introduced at the beginning of the 1990s as a response to the needs of the general public for textiles, which posed no risk to health. Oeko-Tex is an independent, third party certifier that offers two certifications for textiles: Oeko-Tex 100 (for products) and Oeko-Tex 1000 (for production sites/factories). Products satisfying the criteria for Oeko-Tex 100, which are produced in an Oeko-Tex 1000 certified facility, get the Oeko-Tex 100Plus label. The Oeko-Tex 100 label aims to ensure that products pose no risk to health. They do not contain allergenic dye stuffs and dye stuffs that form carcinogenic aryl-amines. They have been tested for pesticides and chlorinated phenols. They have been tested for the release of heavy metals under artificial perspiration conditions. Formaldehyde has been banned; other aldehyde limits are significantly lower than the required legal limits. They have a skin friendly pH, are free from chloro-organic carriers. They are free from biologically active finishes. The certification process includes thorough testing for a lengthy list of chemicals. Specifically banned are: AZO dyes, carcinogenic and allergy-inducing dyes, pesticides, chlorinated phenols, chloro-organic benzenes and toluenes, extractable heavy metals, phthalates in baby products, organotin compounds (TBT and DBT), and emissions of volatile components.

VEGAN
Veganism is the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products. 
Our Vegan filter means that these Honest by products do not contain leather, wool, silk, horn, shell or any other substance produced from animals.

SKIN FRIENDLY
Our skin friendly filter means that the main fabric used to make the garment does not endanger the health of your skin. Skin friendly certificates are Oeko-Tex, Ivn, Gots, Joca and Sacl. RECYCLED
Recycled fabrics and yarns are made of post consumer waste which is purchased in bulk. The waste is sorted by color and respun into yarn. Depending on the end product, it will be used for knitting or weaving fabrics. The biggest advantage of sorting by color is that the yarn does not have to be dyed hence the production of recycled wool yarn saves on energy and water use.

EUROPEAN

ANIMAL WELFARE FOR NON CERTIFIED FABRICS
The National Sheep Association, which safeguards the interest of sheep and farmers within the UK, has confirmed that sheep in the UK are not genetically modified; their genetic material has not been altered using genetic engineering techniques. For centuries though, farmers have selected the best rams and ewes to breed in order to have a higher production quality. All farmers must comply to British and European legislation which has formulated laws regarding good husbandry, transport and animal welfare, amongst other things. Dehorning and mulesing are not practiced in the UK. Tail docking happens everywhere in the UK. It is a recognized practice monitored by the government. Some farmers we have interviewed considered this a controversial practice, whilst others believe this practice benefits the welfare of the animals. In their opinion, tail docking facilitates the treatment sheep undergo when infected with flystrike. Some sheep breeds, such as Shetland, have such short tails that tail docking is unnecessary. Hebrideans on the other hand are Northern Short Tail sheep; their tail is still quite long but native breeds are more resistant to fly strike if they stay in their natural environment, thus they often also do not get tail docked. Ear notching was an old tradition to recognize one sheep from one farm to another and is no longer practiced in the UK. Nowadays, legal requirements force ear tags in both ears of a sheep.
