When Floyd Mayweather returned to boxing to fight Conor Mcgregor, Oscar De La Hoya said that it is bad for boxing since it won’t even be competitive. He thinks that one of the best boxers to ever live will fight an MMA fighter that is yet to make his boxing debut makes the sport a joke.
After the success of the Mayweather vs Mcgregor in terms of revenue, De La Hoya hints that he also wants to come back in the ring to fight once more. He called out Mcgregor as well which makes him a hypocrite for saying that it is a joke then all of a sudden wanting it also.
Oscar De La Hoya is now expressing the willingness to fight in the ring again. He has his eyes on the IBF Middleweight Champion, Gennady Golovkin. He thinks that Golvkin is an easy opponent for him and could be a champion once again.
De La Hoya is out of the ring for 12 years. His last fight was against the smaller boxer, Manny Pacquiao where he was dismantled and his corner suggested stopping the fight due to how one-sided the fight was. Oscar eventually agreed and accepted the loss.
During De La Hoya’s prime, he was a cash cow and the biggest name in boxing. Mayweather made his big-name by beating De La Hoya in a split decision. During their fight, De La Hoya was the A-side in terms of the deal which shows how big he was considering he is fighting the current PPV King, Floyd Mayweather.
But to fight at 47 years old against a current champion is a dumb move. Although GGG lost to Canelo, he is still at least a top 5 middleweight boxer. So Golovkin may not be the feared boxer that was ducked by boxers before but he can still compete at the highest level.
When asked about his reaction to De La Hoya’s claims he said “Everything involving Gennady Golovkin for him is a nightmare. He can say whatever. But let me put it this way – If I got an opportunity to legally kill a person in the ring, I might seize it.” This sounds like a threat to the retired Mexican boxer.
Meanwhile, Golovkin is set to defend his IBF and IBO middleweight belt against undefeated Polish boxer, Kamil Szeremeta. After Golovkin’s close fight against Sergiy Derevyanchenko, fans are speculating that GGG is slowing down and is out of his prime.
Is Golovkin out of his prime or was it just an off day against Sergiy Derevyanchenko. The question will be answered in his upcoming fight against Kamil.
Golovkin was also asked whether he will fight Canelo Alvarez for the third time. He said that he is not focused on Canelo at the moment but thinks that the fight will not happen anymore.
